About the Van Gogh Museum

The Van Gogh Museum holds the world's largest collection devoted to a single painter: some 200 paintings, 500 drawings and 750 letters by Vincent van Gogh. It is not a collection put together by a collector, but what remained in the family's home.

When Vincent died in 1890, almost all of his work was in the hands of his brother Theo, who died six months later. Theo's widow, Jo van Gogh-Bonger, devoted herself to making known the paintings nobody wanted, and her son eventually transferred them to the Dutch State through a foundation in 1962. The museum opened in 1973.

The main building was designed by Gerrit Rietveld, the architect of the Red and Blue Chair and the Schröder House. It is a sober, light-filled volume arranged around a central void, and it opened after its architect's death. In 1999 Kisho Kurokawa's wing for temporary exhibitions was added, and in 2015 Hans van Heeswijk's glass entrance hall moved the entrance to Museumplein.

The collection is displayed in chronological order, floor by floor, and that is what makes the visit different: you start with the earthy tones of the Dutch years, with The Potato Eaters, move through the change of palette in Paris, and arrive at the colour of Arles —Sunflowers, The Bedroom— and the last works from Saint-Rémy and Auvers.

In between is the largest group of self-portraits you can see in one place: Van Gogh could not afford models, so he painted himself again and again. The museum also holds his letters to Theo, a first-person account of everything you see hanging on the walls.
